FOREWORD

By: Dr. Gene A. Getz

“Called”… is a word that in the context of today’s Christianity can sometimes be misunderstood and even misused by well-intended people. It’s easy to think of “professional” Christians, those in full-time vocational ministry, as the only ones who have been called by God. This could not be further from the truth.

The fact of the matter is that we have all been called. When Christ called the disciples He was not asking them to take on a title but to take on a life, a new life that would be transformed by His teachings… a life that would show others this amazing transformation from selfish living to selfless living… a life that would be lived with eternity in mind and not simply the here and now.

And if we’ve been called, we’ve also been encouraged “call others.” When Christ addressed the disciples, in Matthew 28, He charged them to make disciples. He told them to baptize them into this new life and teach them to observe what He had shown them. And while there is no easy formula to ensure the results will always be positive, we have been left with a manual, God’s Word, which gives us principles to live by.

As a Christian, our life is not a sprint but a relay. The track is eternal. The baton we hold in our hand has been passed to us and we must pass it faithfully to others. And while the culture around us would tell us life is about running, Kary Oberbrunner reminds us it’s really about the pass. He gives us foundational practices that will help us pass the baton more effectively… practices developed from the principles Christ Himself left for us.

In Called, Kary gets to the heart of the life we are all called to live. Furthermore, he weaves personal life experiences with biblical examples to encourage us to live with a larger life in mind. Called will equip and empower you to become who you were born to be, the person Jesus Christ has called you to be.
