Reason # 7 Why your blog might stink – Length

kidsReason #7 Too Lengthy

A blog isn’t a book and a book isn’t a blog.  We forget such simple distinctions. I don’t know many people who like long lines, especially when they have somewhere they need to get. Most of the people I hang with are very busy and don’t have time to read a long post.

Posts are meant to be as quick and refreshing as a cup of cold water.

Remember the kid who took a super long time at the water fountain after recess?

marathonPlain and simple: blogs that frequently post too much content are only communicating one thing = disrespect for their readers. In a world where the average person encounters over 3,000 ads a day…LESS IS MORE!

Reason #7 Why it stunk in the past = Too Long

Reason #7 Why it doesn’t stink =  A commitment to brief, concise, quality posts.

See you soon with Reason #6

A few blogs doing it well ( i.e they’ve cracked the code on correct length): Mark Waltz, Brad Lomenick, Marla Taviano.

  • Were you “that kid” who took a long time at the drinking fountain?
  • If not, did you ever punch “that kid” for taking too long?

Thank you for these helpful tips! I am taking them to heart and making some positive changes.

God bless you and your ministry!

    Merry Christmas!

The precarious balance, and one that I would like to hear your thoughts on, is between length and thorough-ness.

Some topics just require more than 3-4 paragraphs, it seems to me. My philosophy has always been let the subject dictate the length.

Luke. Good exception…but I still wouldn’t make it a regular habit. Instead, try breaking up longer posts with a several part series (1, 2, 3, etc.) or a top 10 list.

Kary: I violate deliberately the length purpose all the time. The notes for the Bible teaching go around the world on the blog format, as well as the audio. My students use the notes and many people use the sermons and teachings. If I shorten the post, the purpose will be defeated. I am not worried about large syndication, but about accomplishing the purposes for the blog I set up. It serves my plan, and a short version wouldn’t. Thanks for the thoughts. R

Good imput Randy. You’ve demonstrated the multi-purpose nature of blogs….i.e. BIBLE NOTES. Keep it up man.
