I am not trying to complain or be critical. And for the record…I do like baptists.
I just found this job description at the minimum…odd?
What do you think? I’d like to know…
Senior Pastor
Posted by: Southern Baptist Church
- That he be a graduate of any one of the SBC Seminaries. (Southern, Southwestern, New Orleans, Midwestern,
Golden Gate, Southwestern.) - That he has been a pastor in at least one Southern Baptist Church, two would be better.
- That he be very diligent in his visitation of church families. This is a must.
- That he be a “fire and brime-stone” preacher, preaching often on salvation.
- That he gives an “altar-call” every time he preaches. In other words, make it possible every time he preaches for people under conviction to come forward and make a commitment of their salvation experience, or desiring membership by letter or statement.
- That the Pastor preach both Sunday morning and Sunday evening sermons, with a short Bible study on Wednesday evening along with a prayer service.
- That the pastor will appoint someone besides himself to lead the congregational singing during the Worship Services.
- We pray that the pastor’s wife might be a pianist.
- We pray that the pastor will be deeply dedicated to cooperate with the NwOBA, State Convention, and the SBC. That he be fully supportive of the MV Baptist Center, and the WA-Feed the Hungry program.
Would you take the job?

Even if i was SB I would absolutely 100% run as far away from this job as possible. Talk about a box with four walls! Those walls are so high they could never be scaled.
What is wrong with this picture? Nothing is mentioned about the requirements set out by the Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 3. I am a Southern Baptist, and the average tenure of a pastor is 18 months. no wonder, with a job description like that.
Yeah…wife’s playing the piano didn’t make Paul’s list.
18 months hey?
That’s sad.
At least we both saw the dangers Bill.
That’s a good sign
Hope you are well in this holiday season.
I’m wondering where the part about “equipping the saints” comes in… oh, wait! That’s the pastor’s job — to visit, to teach, to sing, to … the “saints’” job is to sit in the pew, soak in the pastor’s words, and sour when they don’t like it!
Unfortunately, I’ve been in churches with that thinking. Thank GOD for the freedom He’s shown me in the simplicity of His Word!
I’m a recruiter, and aside from this job post violating general best practices, I think it actually attracts the kind of candidates that violate the principles you laid out in your book.
I have a mild hesitation in bringing the “pharisee” term to the table, since I do not have the authorization to judge…
Wow. It’d be an interesting conversation to have with the person who takes this gig.
It’s open Rhett. You could take it
How is the RD job coming?
“odd” is not the word I would use… “sad” with a whole lot of head shaking
I shake my head with you Michael.
