I hit a mailbox with my minivan

I have a confession.frustrated

First of all I drive a minivan. Second I hit a mailbox and ripped off the minivan mirror.

Here me out. The mailbox was not standing at 90 degrees. It actually stuck out in the road. And I do mean BEFORE I hit it.  So it’s not my fault. Right?

Well $278 dollars later I am not a happy camper. But I did learn a lesson.

picture-002You see I’ve always heard character is how you are when no one’s looking. After my mailbox incident – which by the way scarred my 3 1/2 yr. old son because every time I turn on that particular road he says to me, “Daddy we’re not going to hit the mailbox again, are we?” – anyhow, I’ve redefined the meaning of character.

Now I understand that character is how you are when the unexpected happens.

Needless to say, I didn’t swear or yell when I made impact. I was mad yes, but only when my loving  wife kindly pointed out what I just did (i.e. hitting the mailbox) – at that point pictureI didn’t respond in a patient way.

I’m usually cool when no one’s looking (usually). But  God has been revealing to me that my sin is when the unexpected things of life happen.

My immediate response reveals where my heart is – with Jesus or someplace else.

Lesson learned. Hopefully. But please agree with me that the mailbox was sticking out in the road BEFORE I hit it.

Right? Come on. Will you give me that. Yes or No?

  1. Kary, great post. Stumbled across your site with the Batterson interview. Glad I did.
Isn’t it amazing how God can use a mailbox or spilled coffee or locking your keys in your car to reveal our weaknesses. We’ve all been there. Thanks for your openeness and transparency.

  2. Hmm. I don’t know. My question is how is it that you have a photo of the mailbox before it was hit? Just askin’, Kary. Just askin’. : )
