Are you an MSN Christian or a GOOGLE Christian?

You know the difference between MSN and Google?

MSN =

Cluttered, jumbled, a large number of articles, topics, headings, themes, colors, and messages.

They designed it this way. They wanted to capture your interest. They even have a search bar powered by BING.

GOOGLE =

Crisp, clean, simple, easy to navigate, one purpose in mind (OK maybe 2). They also have a search bar.

They also designed it this way. They wanted to provide relevant answers to your search question.

On Sunday morning, at Grace Church, I’ll be preaching in all 3 services a message titled GOSPEL 101.

The sermon in a sentence is: SIMPLE IS BETTER.

The text is 1 Corinthians 1:17-31.

We’ll answer the question:

Are you an MSN Christian or a GOOGLE Christian?

As I sign off, I’d like to know, which one are you?Gospel-google for insert

I am a “GOOGLE Christian” – Growing up, my home church provided a true spiritual home for me – the messages seemed relevant to all age groups, the church focused on a few ministries and looked to include as many of us a possible. With the change in our leadership came a change in focus: emphasis was placed on growing larger, branching into more and more ministries, etc. The messages also became less-relevant and – in my opinion – anti-youth. I actually no longer felt welcome and certainly not loved.

Since then I’ve been to churches where I have left feeling like I have seen a good show, but got very little out them. Others presented messages that seemed irrelevant (which is very similar, I find, to the search results provided by Microsoft’s Bing) or strayed too far from Matthew 22:37-39.

Without sounding too “Pollyana-ish”, I prefer to here a positive message that fills me spiritually, makes me want more, and doesn’t over-do it. I want to feel welcomed and loved.

I’d say I’m mostly a “Google Gal”. I have many parts in my life………….however, as far as my relationship with the LORD goes? I like to ask myself one question: Is what I am doing bringing glory to God? Not just because I know He’s watching everything I do, but because I want Him to know that I truly love and respect Him. I want to bring Him honor. He is my DAD after all and I want to be a child He can be proud of in my thoughts, in my words and in what I do. I know I fall short of all those areas. I guess that’s why there’s a “Help/Support” button (the Holy Spirit) I can turn to whenever I need to. I usually just type in these letters into the search “B-I-B-L-E”. It doesn’t always take me exactly where I think I should be. Sometimes I still need to do a bit of search (i.e. praying), but that’s always where I find the answer.

      Great insight Google girl.

    Kary,

I hate the MSN page – it’s too busy, too many choices, cluttered . . . .as you said.

God, as in MSN, would mean ‘when have I done enough of whatever to attain what

must be the best of what God has to offer?’.

The Google page is much more appealing because it is crisp, clear, no guessing

like salvation by grace alone. No guessing, humility and repentance is required, but

    the ‘result’ is definite.

BTW, I LIKE your Recovering Pharisee title b/c I identify so strongly having been raised

in a fundamental, legalistic church, and it leads me to remember what God has done in

bringing me to Himself by freeing me from the tyranny of the ‘oughts /got-tos’.

    I am a recovering Pharisee who’s glad I’m not where I was.
