Are you closer to Heaven or Hell?

Posted under Faith and Culture

Still chewing on a quote I heard from Dr. Tony Beckett at a funeral he officiated last Thursday at our church:

If you are a Christian then this world is the closest you will get to Hell. If you aren’t a Christian then this world is the closest you will get to Heaven.

Your thoughts?

  1. There is a certain truth in this comment, though it must be placed in the right Christian worldview. I am afraid that many people will see this through the escapist theology of leaving earth and going-off to heaven when they die. But I am not sure the statement will stand in that setting. I think the only way you can adopt such a position is if you grab hold of God’s plan to renew the heavens and the earth – that is the only way any experience of earth could be connected to an experience of heaven. The two are intended to come together in perfect existence.

Otherwise, I think the statement fails to be logical.

  2. Love it and agree with you. Got a whole chapter in The Fine Line called Thy Kingdom Come. The already/not yet view of the Kingdom and embodying the Kingdom.
