This week’s Sermon Outline. Whose slave are you?

My sermon outline for Sunday morning. The respective Podcast will be up next week.

Whose Slave are You?

2.22.09 ::Grace Church :: Kary Oberbrunner :: Romans 6:14-23

SERMON IN A SENTENCE

Don’t be deceived: your Master defines your desires and your destiny.

I.       Don’t be deceived.

           A.  Are you enslaved and ignorant? (John chapter eight)

               1. The devil’s teaching is false. (v. 38, 44)

               2. His lie enslaves you. (v.33)

         B.  Are you liberated and alive? (John chapter eight)

              1. Jesus’ teaching is true. (v. 31, 45)

              2. His truth sets you free. (v. 32)

II.  Your Master defines your desires

     A. If your Master is the Devil…

         1. He’ll enslave you and you’ll carry out his desires. (John 8: 37, 40, 44, 55)

         2. He’ll steal, kill, and destroy you. (John 10:10)

     B. If your Master is Jesus…

         1. He’ll set you free we you’ll be free indeed. (John 8:36)

         2. He’ll give you life and life to the full. (John 10:10)

III. Your Master defines your destiny

     A. If your Master is the Devil…

         1. Then by presenting your body to sin, you’ll become an instrument

             of unrighteousness. (Romans 6:13)

         2. You’ll experience eternal death. (Romans 6:23)

         3. You’ll be bonded to your Master and his nature. (Romans 6:14)

       B. If your Master is Jesus…

           1. Then by presenting your body alive to God, you’ll become an instrument of

               righteousness. (Romans 6:13)

           2. You’ll experience eternal life. (Romans 6:23)

           3. You’ll be bonded to your Master and his nature.

               (Romans 1:1; 6:18, 22; Exodus 21:5-6; Deuteronomy 15:12-17)

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28:30

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Luke 4:18-19

Grace Group Questions:

1. Whose slave are you?

2. Have you presented yourself to God? If not, why not? If so what difference has it made in your life?

3. Are you truly free? If not, why not?

4. What outcome does being God’s slave produce in this life? What about the next life?

5. Who are some people in your world that are enslaved and ignorant? How can you help liberate them.
